GOTS at MELAWEAR
MELAWEAR. Natural and organic.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is widely regarded as the world’s leading standard for textile production from organic fibers and yarns. It sets high ecological and social standards for all elements of textile production, with a goal towards setting a standard in sustainabl textile production for customer guidance and security. The goal of this standard is to define what is meant by sustainable textile production in order to give customers guidance and security. This standard covers every step in the production process, from growing and processing the raw fibers, to environmentally and socially responsible production of garments, and finally in regards to the labeling and distribution of the finished garments.
Amongst the most important environmental criteria of the GOTS standard are:
- Any chemical additives (e.g. colors, auxiliary and process agents) must undergo testing to ensure they satisfy the criteria for non-toxicity and bio-degradability.
- The use of problematic additives such as toxic heavy metals, formaldehyde, aromatic solvents, and genetically modified organisms (GMO) and their enzymes are prohibited.
- Discharge printing, using aromatic solvents as well as plastisol printing processes using phthalates and PVC are prohibited.
- Packaging material must not contain PVC. All paper or cardboard used in all packaging, tags, banderols etc. must be either FSC or PEFC certified or recycled.
Quality assurance is achieved by an independent certification process along the entire supply chain. In order to receive the certificate a company must comply with all criteria of the standards. GOTS relies on a two pillar system of local site audits and chemical analyses of finished products to make sure the certification criteria are adhered to.
